StadtKontor at Besenbinderhof receives new façade

The Hamburg office of KPW Papay Warncke Vagt Architekten wins the façade competition for the new quarter near the main railway station and the central bus station, organised by the B&L Group in cooperation with the Free Hanseatic City of Hamburg.

The seven-member jury particularly praised the central entrance to the "StadtKontor" for its striking presence in the cityscape and the generous design of the foyer, which extends across the entire width. The high window fronts create a seamless connection between the interior and exterior spaces and enrich the surrounding cityscape. The chosen plinth zones were integrated very harmoniously with the existing building. The intelligent connection of the various areas of use aimed for inside the building, which creates a modern and attractive working environment, is thus easily recognisable.

The Besenbinderhof 43, 52/Norderstraße 101 ensemble is located in the centre of the lively St. Georg district and was acquired by the B&L Group in 2021. The property comprises around 67,000m2 of office space and approx. 4,000m2 of storage space as well as a canteen measuring approx. 4,000m2. The aim is to largely preserve the existing building and significantly reduce the primary energy requirement through a sophisticated energy-efficient refurbishment. At the same time, a redesign of the interior is planned to create a contemporary and attractive working environment. The existing canteen, which offers space for up to 1,500 people, is to become a "marketplace" for the building's users. This new "marketplace" will provide centralised access and offer space for various events and networking between users.

When redesigning the façade, particular attention was paid to retaining as much of the already bound grey energy as possible. The façade should not only be inviting and representative, but also appropriately reflect the central location of the building in the immediate vicinity of the main railway station. Attention was paid to the use of recycled and recyclable materials.
